Road Safety Ambassador Program

The Road Safety and Injury Prevention Ambassadors Program includes the following steps:

Attending a tour of the Montreal General Hospital Trauma Centre
Sharing the tour experience with their peers
Creating an Injury Prevention Project to present to their peers
Obtaining a certificate of completion

The original in-person program was created in partnership with the Longeuil Police Service (SPAL) and the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). In 2015, it received provincial recognition with the “Award of Excellence for the best prevention program in partnership” at the Intersection policière Gala.

Trauma Centre Tour

The Montreal General Hospital Trauma Centre Tour gives young people the opportunity to understand what a trauma patient goes through: resuscitation, surgery, rehabilitation, etc.

Most of all, the main goal is for young people to see the consequences of so-called “risky” behaviour, and learn how to identify and reduce these behaviours in order to lower their risk of trauma.

For example, they witness the re-enactment of life-saving medical procedures, hear testimonials from trauma survivors, and get a closer look at the work of various health professionals. They will get an inside look at the following areas: the resuscitation room in the emergency room where a scenario is staged, the CT scan room, the operating room, and the intensive care unit. Lastly, we discuss the importance of the blood bank, tissue and organ donation.

Projects and Certificate

Then, back in the classroom or virtual classroom, the Young Ambassadors, their community police officer or dedicated staff will collaborate to create one or multiple Injury Prevention projects to share with their peers and on social media. The program encourages creativity and is flexible regarding the projects. For example, Ambassadors can consult a list of ideas or create their own innovative project alone or in groups; project presentations can be given throughout the school year or just once, as decided by the school.

All Ambassadors who have attended the visit, shared their experience, completed their project and submitted it to Code Trauma will receive an official certificate of completion.

How do I register?

In order to register for the program, please follow these steps:

1. Select a date and confirm its availability with us by email: codetrauma@muhc.mcgill.ca;. Let us know how many students will attend, and if you will attend as a group or if you wish to attend virtually.
2. Ensure each student completes our consent form prior to the Virtual Trauma Centre Tour;
3. Send us a list of students who will be attending the visit (Excel format);
4. Give the students the link to the Pre-Visit Form questionnaire and time to answer the questions and submit the questionnaire;
5. After the visit, give the students the link to the Post-Visit evaluation and give them sufficient time to complete it.
